Perinatal Bereavement

Approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage, and many families experience other forms of perinatal loss. Despite how common these experiences are, they are often misunderstood, and many care providers feel unsure how best to support individuals and families during these difficult circumstances.
In this recorded presentation, community maternal health expert and retired nurse Pat Spier provides an overview of perinatal bereavement, including key definitions, the range of losses that families may experience during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and common contributing factors. The session also explores prevalence rates, as well as disparities in perinatal loss and how these experiences can impact individuals, families, and communities.
